About Fort Valley State University

Fort Valley State University, or FVSU for short, is a historically black university (HBCU) located in Fort Valley, which is the county seat of Peach County, situated in the US state of Georgia, having a population estimated at a number of little over 8000, during the 2000 census. Fort Valley is the corporate headquarters of the Blue Bird Corporation, which is a large manufacturer of buses, and it is best known for being the home of Fort Valley State University.

FVSU's history started with the 1939 consolidation of the Fort Valley High and Industrial School, chartered in 1895, and the State Teachers and Agricultural College of Forsyth, which was founded in 1902, which were merged and formed Fort Valley State College, which became Fort Valley State University, a State and Land-Grant University, in June 1996.

Today, Fort Valley State University is a comprehensive institution, with a total enrollment of approximately 4000 students, most of which are undergraduates, and which offers bachelor's degrees in more than 50 majors, as well as master's degrees in education and counseling, the university being accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award associate, baccalaureate, master's and specialist degrees.

Athletics

Fort Valley's athletic teams are known as the Wildcats, who compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in various sports for both men and women, including in basketball, tennis, softball, volleyball and track and field. Among the most notable thletic alumni from the university is alumnus Catherine Hardy, who, in 1952, won a gold medal as a member of the winning 400-meter women’s relay team at the Olympic Games at Helsinki, Finland, and Tyrone Poole, who, in 1995, became the first football player from Fort Valley State University to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. The distinctive colors of the Wildcats are royal blue and gold.
